SDG 14: Life Below Water

SDG 14 connects education and research with the protection of oceans and aquatic ecosystems, promoting awareness of marine pollution, biodiversity, and sustainable use of water resources.

Teaching and Learning

Integrated marine ecosystems, freshwater systems, and aquatic sustainability concepts in relevant courses (Biology, Environmental Science, GenEd) Embedded environmental protection, pollution control, and ecosystem preservation in curriculum (OBE-aligned) Promoted student projects on water conservation, plastic reduction, and aquatic ecosystem protection Incorporated case studies on Philippine coastal and freshwater issues

Through hands-on training and real-world experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills, and responsibility needed to help protect people and the environments they depend on.
Teaching and Learning for SDG 14
Research for SDG 14
Research

Conducted research on water pollution, watershed protection, and freshwater ecosystem sustainability Supported studies linking waste management (SDG 12) to water system protection Promoted interdisciplinary research on environmental conservation and aquatic ecosystems Collaborated with DENR, LGUs, and environmental organizations

Olivarez College Tagaytay students explore sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic products through research on algae-based straws and biodegradable cups derived from oyster mushrooms. These innovations have the potential to help reduce plastic waste and support the protection of aquatic ecosystems.
Engagement

Conducted environmental campaigns on plastic reduction and water conservation Participated in or organize clean up drives (rivers, lakes, coastal areas in partnership with LGUs) Promoted community awareness on protecting water systems and aquatic biodiversity Integrated SDG 14 awareness in KADIWA and sustainability programs

Through industry-academe dialogue, we connect education with real-world perspectives and strengthen collective action toward more responsible and sustainable practices.
Engagement for SDG 14
Governance and Administration for SDG 14
Governance and Administration

Institutionalized policies on wastewater management, pollution control, and plastic reduction Implemented campus-wide reduction of single-use plastics Ensured proper waste disposal systems to prevent water contamination Monitored compliance with environmental regulations (DENR standards) Allocated budget for environmental protection initiatives

Promotes proper waste segregation through color-coded and labeled trash bins to help prevent water pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems.
